Lam Son 719

For you old dogs from Udorn - this is a great video site that recounts the Lam Son 719 operation where MACV and SVN invaded Laos in an attempt to cut the Ho Chi Minh trail.

ABCCC isn’t mentioned but I recall many nights of providing support to these guys.  It looked like it might work at the get-go… but it was not to be.  http://military.discovery.com/convergence/lamson/videogallery/videogallery.html

I flew the first night of Lamson 719 (with Alleycat replacing Moonbeam for about 4 hours due to aircraft difficulties), during the operation (with Hillsboro) and the last night (with Moonbeam).

The initial thrust was successful, with more than enough support from USAF, USN, & Marines--we had to dump ordnance during the first several hours into the Sand Boxes due to having a lack of targets for the number of strike flights coming in.

Then, days later, things got bogged down as the S. Vietnamese Army settled into a defensive posture, establishing artillery firebases along the highway to Tchepone, rather than keeping armor and infantry sweeps going to find and engage the enemy.

The last night was very sad: Arclights were serving as close air support within 3 klicks (!) of friendlies and pleas from S. Vietnamese commanders for more helicopters to evacuate them were hard to listen to, and very difficult to support, given the level of AAA and our helicopter losses, which I recall totaled more than 100 during the few weeks of the operation.

Not a happy memory…
