Mr. John (Chuck) Yeager, Air Force Armament Museum Specialist, at Eglin AFB is in the process of refurbishing portions of the ABCCC capsule they have on display there.
He would like to be contacted by anyone who may have knowledge of the capsule and how it’s all put together.
You don’t need to be Capsule Maintenance to help… he would like to hear from anyone who might have an interest in helping him understand what he’s dealing with.
Currently, he’s coordinated full refurbishment of the upholstery by an Eglin AFB contractor - at no cost to the museum. This is a significant undertaking… all seats and headrests will be refinished.
He has also obtained a Moonbeam Party Suit from the late 1960’s/early 1970’s that is being prepared for mannequin display later on this year.
I visited the museum yesterday on a trip through Ft. Walton. I recommend it to anyone near or passing by Eglin AFB. It’s about 35 miles off of I-10 for those of you moving through the panhandle of Florida on the Interstate. It’s a quick down and back from I-10 and well worth the side trip. There is much more at the museum than just one of our capsules. Many aircraft on display as well as a large and interesting collection of indoor displays of USAF weaponry.
Here is Chuck’s contact info:

Hind Sight is nearly always 20-20…
“In the two most recent operations involving U.S. forces, the EC-130E ABCCC platform was not available. The Air Force had retired it in 2002 on the premise that the CAOC would have sufficient communications resources to exercise command and control over vast distances in a widely distributed battlespace. In the absence of an ABCCC, the airborne warning and control system (AWACS) and joint surveillance and target attack radar system (JSTARS) had to fulfill the battlefield management role. This led to problems, both real and perceived, in providing air support to ground forces in a widely distributed battlespace.”

We all know that several of the 7ACCS birds were used in the ill-fated attempt to rescue American hostages from Teheran in May of 1980… and one was lost, along with its crew. But some of may be surprised to learn that preparation for a second rescue attempt had been initiated.
Dubbed Project Credible Sport, it was aimed at heavily modifying three C-130H aircraft so they would be able to land and take off from the Amjadien soccer stadium across the street from the U. S. Embassy in Teheran. You can read all about it here: http://www.crediblesport.com/.
Here is a youtube.com video that shows some of the testing - including a test that went bad-wrong at the end of this video.

For you old dogs from Udorn - this is a great video site that recounts the Lam Son 719 operation where MACV and SVN invaded Laos in an attempt to cut the Ho Chi Minh trail.
ABCCC isn’t mentioned but I recall many nights of providing support to these guys. It looked like it might work at the get-go… but it was not to be. http://military.discovery.com/convergence/lamson/videogallery/videogallery.html

Diane Calmes sent us some pictures she got from Barry Watson - of 7th and 42nd ACCS memorabilia that was recovered from Keesler AFB after Hurricane Katrina ripped it up in August, 2005. None of the recoveries are in very good shape… it looks like they went through a hurricane or something…
We have those photos posted in Calmoose’s gallery which can be reached through our Gallery page - Click Here.

I drove from Panama City to Pensacola this morning, to drop the wife off at the Pensacola airport. On the way back home, I swung by the Armament Museum at Eglin AFB and spent about 5 minutes in the ABCCC Capsule they have on display. She’s well looked after, clean and in as good a shape as she can be. Missing a few switchs and bulbs here and there but all-in-all, she doing well. It was a nice five minutes and I’m lucky to live near enough to her to visit now and then.
She says hi…
I also stopped at a little Thai restaurant on Mountain Ave in Destin for lunch… It was a good day…
